A splashy OBJECT Rotterdam 2015!

Dive into the world of Contemporary Design

Yesterday evening. 7 PM. I almost saw Leonardo on the foredeck shouting out:

I’m the king of the Woooooorrrrrrld!

Massive Titanic brainwave! Nothing could be further from the truth. What I really saw was the fantastic skyline of Rotterdam (oh, how I love that city!) and a bunch of design objects to die for in a über-cool historical environment! Contemporary design on a boat. Perfect! The famous SS Rotterdam, to be more specific. It’s the former flagship of the Holland America Line (made between 1956-1958) and this year’s location of OBJECT Rotterdam.

OBJECT Rotterdam 2015

From today (February 5) until February 8 Rotterdam hosts its Art Rotterdam Week, including OBJECT 2015. During thé multidisciplinary contemporary design fair, 50 national and international design professionals show off their objects. Art, fashion, architecture and interior, it all comes together!

The fair takes place in several spaces of the ship. The Odyssee room (named after the famous poem of Homerus and visualized by Nico Nagler in the rooms ceramic reliefs) is the place to be for inspiring design talks. My tip: the lectures by Klaas Krijnen on Sunday about the history of the ship and its interior. The unique Fontaine Room (named after the fables of the French poet Jean de La Fontaine and also visualized by Nico Nagler in the rooms ceramic reliefs) presents 20 participants whose works are made of extraordinary materials. On the main deck the hotel rooms are turned into almost site-specific design works and last but not least you have the mighty Glass Enclosed Promenade. Here, you can find the fashion, interior, product and/ or industrial designs of 35 participants. Nice to know, for once the old ‘Trossendek’ is open to the public.
