HOTSPOTTED Morgan & Mees in Amsterdam

Morgan & Mees Hall

It all comes together at Morgan & Mees. The neoclassical building, the robust yet classic interior design, the super friendly staff and the delicious menu! I love playing tourist in my own city and I promised myself to do that more often this year. After a little Google research “new hot spots Amsterdam”, my eye caught some impressive photo’s of hotel and restaurant Morgan & Mees! Plus, the logo is designed by one of my favorite 80s inspired graphic design duos: The Phoney Club. Yup, this MUST BE an instant hit! So, last week my friend and I grabbed our laptops and notebooks and switched workplaces. On our way to this new place to be.

Amsterdam West side!

I’m not that much of a foodie (shame on me!) but I do love places which overwhelm me by their beauty and historic character. No wonder that the eye-catching monumental building in which Morgan & Mees is located at the corner of the Hugo de Grootstraat and Nassaukade in Amsterdam West caught my attention.

Commissioned by the Protestant Widows and Orphans Fund, this building (together with the terraced houses from number 8 to 18) was built between 1880 and 1883 in Neoclassical style with Renaissance ornaments by Egbert Kuipers (father of the famous Dutch architects Roelof, Tjeerd and Foeke Kuipers who designed a lot of structures throughout Amsterdam). The terraced houses served as a home to widows with young children. The original function of the monumental mansion on the corner which is now Morgan & Mees was a child care centre.

Bar & Restaurant

After two years of renovation, this building is now the center of attention when it comes to wining and dining (and sleeping) in the Frederiksbuurt. When you enter this dream villa you will find the bar area with its luxurious marble bar and steel bar shelves on the left side. On the right there is the bright restaurant area with industrial lamps, art by Jasper Krabbé and fish bone style wooden floors. You see the old architectural elements everywhere, like the round-arched window at the façade and the wooden ceiling in the second part of the restaurant. HEA-VEN!

Although we haven’t eaten there yet, because we weren’t really hungry (OOPS, but the wine was delightful…), the menu looked mega tasty! I mean Asian crab sandwiches for lunch, Calamaris à la plancha as a starter and a Procureur 24 heures (what? SAUERKRAUT! Yummi!) as a main course and my favorite dessert all time (I’m from Brabant you know…): Kef’s cheese platter (including that bottle of Quinta do Pégo Late bottled vintage, pretty please!).

Morgan & Mees, you can already set a large table because I will come back soon with my whole Burgundian family to make it one big food feast at your place!
